Canadian government settles lawsuit over children ‘scooped’ out of indigenous communities

The Canadian federal government of Justin Trudeau on Friday responded to a group of lawsuits by agreeing to pay C$750 million to the survivors of the “Sixties Scoop” program, in which 20,000 First Nations children were removed from their parents’ households and placed with non-indigenous foster or adoptive parents.

Hurricane Nate weakens as it reaches United States

After killing 30 people on a rampage through Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Nicaragua and dumping rain on the Yucatan in Mexico, Hurricane Nate reached the U.S. states of Louisiana and Mississippi on the north shore of the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday night.

Pakistan: At least 18 killed, others wounded in suicide attack at Balochistan Sufi shrine

According to varying reports, at least eighteen people were killed and at least 20 were injured in a suicide attack at Fateh Pur shrine in Jhal Magsi district, located in Pakistan’s western province of Balochistan on Thursday.

Researchers find preserving spotted owl habitat may not require a tradeoff with wildfire risk after all

In a study scheduled for publication in the December 1 issue of Forest Ecology and Management, scientists have found a way to resolve the conflict that has sprung up between protecting forests from increasingly frequent wildfires and droughts and preserving sufficient habitat for the endangered spotted owl, Strix occidentalis.
